Description of Presentation
Do you and your students compare individual data with trends in class data?
In this session, we will demonstrate how to utilize Google Spreadsheets and Forms. We will show you how to create a Google Form that has the ability to populate data to a common spreadsheet. There will be a hands on activity where you will submit data as if you were a student. You will learn how to graph data from the common spreadsheet. From there, we will talk about how to analyze and manipulate the data to make it more meaningful for your students. The final step will be embedding the spreadsheet into a wiki or course management system.
Session Notes (S. Allen)
Jennie is a Chemistry teacher. Her presentation focused on using forms and spreadsheets.
Teacher needs a Google account. Students do not need an account with the way that Jennie is using Google docs.
Best practice - use form to collect data instead of all students on one spreadsheet
Google doc forms
can be used for assessment
can be used to collect lab data
when you create a form you are given a link to publish the form
the published link is used for students to access the form
Jennie demonstrated forms using a Rain Lab - 5 participants entered data on the form so the group could see the data populating a Google doc spreadsheet
Google doc spreadsheet
not as powerful as Excel
can export data as Excel file
can graph data from spreadsheet in the sheet or as a separate chart in the workbook
can insert formulas into spreadsheet
can embed the spreadsheet or graph into Moodle, website or a wikispace
Under Share
Publish as a web apge
Click on automatically re-publish when chagnes are made
Click on more publishing options - HTML to embed in webpage - all sheets - generate URL - copy Code and insert it into your target source
You can edit width and height numbers in the code to enlarge the embedded charts.
